the pastor for the Smith Creek/Central Grove United Methodist churches. Many parishioners have referred to me as Pastor Gene over the years. After serving as the full-time pastor at California, MO. for four years I retired on July 1, 2021, and my wife Marilyn and I moved to Troy, MO. to be closer to our family. The District Superintendent called me in July and I agreed to serve Smith Creek/ Central Grove as the part-time pastor starting August 15, 2021.
I am a licensed local pastor and have served full-time from July 2008- July 2017 in the Dakotas United Methodist conference. My wife, who is also a licensed local pastor in the UMC sought to be a part of the Missouri UMC conference to enable us to be closer to our family in St. Louis. The conference accepted us and found each of us a church to serve as of July 2017. We are truly appreciative and have enjoyed being in much closer proximity to our family.
I come from an agricultural background. I was raised on a farm in east central South Dakota. Livestock over the years included hogs, cattle, sheep, broiler chickens, and a few horses. Crops raised were wheat, oats, corn, barley, alfalfa, and grass hay. I have a B.S. degree in Ag education from So. Dak. State Univ. I did teach for two years but returned to the more hands-on side of agriculture. My wife and I co-managed a 440 sow-to-feeder pig operation for eight years. We owned a small farm where we raised hogs, cattle, and sheep. We also raised 1500 broiler chickens that we butchered and sold ourselves. For the last 10 years before becoming a pastor in 2017 I was also the owner/operator of a high-pressure washing business. A large portion of my business was cleaning out hog confinement buildings in eastern South Dakota.
My wife and I were very active members for 27 years in the Riverview UMC when we both felt God’s call for us to become pastors and we have served as pastors since that time.
My wife Marilyn and I have been married since August 20, 1977.
We have two grown sons, Jackson and Curtis, that live in the St. Louis area. Jackson and his wife Lorena have two sons named Andres and Lucas. Curtis is married to his husband Jack Farrell.
May your life be filled with God’s peace, joy, love, and grace.
Love God Love Neighbor
